Chemistry question – fireplace pine cones?
I want to make an assortment of fireplace pinecones that will burn colors. I DO NOT WANT TO CREATE HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS IN MY HOME!!!) On the web I have compiled a list of chemicals/compounds that when soaked in water with the cones will produce vibrant colors. Can someone with a chemistry background look at the list and tell me where to buy these ingredients, give any precautions I need to be aware of and give me some feedback as to whether any of the chemicals are not practical/cost effective to use?
Alum (thallium), Blue Vitrio1 (copper sulfate), Barium, Strontium Chloride, Boric Acid, Lithium Chloride, Lithium Carbonate, Copper Chloride, Copper Acetoarsenite, Copper Sulfate, Copper Chloride, Calcium Chloride, Calcium Sulfate, Calcium, Sodium Chloride, Borax (sodium tetraborate, Cryolite, Saltpeter (potassium nitrate), Potassium Chloride, Lithium Chloride, Plaster of Paris, Epsom Salts (magnesium sulfate), Barium Oxide, Aluminum, Titanium, Magnesium powder or flakes.
Calcium chloride is in some road salt for ice removal. Sodium chloride (just plain salt), potassium chloride (diet salt), epsom salts, and borax can be gotten at the grocery store. Plaster of Paris can be gotten at hobby stores. Some of the copper salts may be available from swimming pool stores. All others will be difficult to get. You may check fireplace supply companies.
More important is you requirement of “no hazardous conditions”. All of these have that potential. In fact plain pine cones can cause problems if handled incorrectly and fireplaces have their own dangers. When is the last time you had your chimmney cleaned? Most of these are toxic salts if misused and you should not put them in a situation where you may get some of them up your nose if you spill them or sneeze. EPA classifies all copper, barium, and strontium salts as toxic to the environment and industries have to monitor their use (homeowners do not).
No matter what you do , use care with all these.
