Which knife sharpener should i get?
I need any easy to use affordable sharpener that wont damage my pocket knife. i found this sharpener http://www.amazon.com/DMT-FWEF-Diafold-Sharpener-Extra-Fine/dp/B00004WFTV/ref=pd_cp_hi_2 it comes in Coarse/Fine or Fine/Extra Fine. Which would be better for keeping my pocket knife razor sharp?
DMT sharpeners including those diafolds are high quality tools and when used properly they provide excellent results.
You’ll need both or alternatively, get one and use something else for the missing one.
To be more specific.
Coarse/Fine will be user less frequently, when the knife is very dull, requires serious rebeveling, etc. Fine/Extrafine is mainly for touchups, light maintenance/sharpening. Unless you do very heavy duty work with your folder daily, like cutting lots of old carpeting or something like that, you can get by touching up on extra fine for weeks.
However, eventually all things wear down, so will your edge and you’ll need to sharpen, i’e. thin down the edge again, etc. That is where coarse grit is needed.
You can do the same thing with fine grit, but it’ll take several times longer, and for harder steels the difference will be greater. Most likely you wont’ sit all day grinding one side of the blade..
So, if you have to choose one, then I’d go with fine/extra fine and for heavy duty sharpening just use sandpaper/mousepad method, just get 200-400 grit sandpaper and that’ll do.

BTW, in the beginning that works a lot better than DMTs,. it’s more novice friendly than stones.
P.S. Starting with ceramic rod most of which are close or over 1000 grit and then going to 1000 grit stone is very strange choice. And jump from 1000 grit to 6K is very big, ideally you’d want 2x increment in the grit, may be 3x.
I do have about a dozen Japanese waterstones, but DMTs still have their place for me.
