How to Properly Sharpen Hair Scissors
Just like knives and pencils, hair scissors need to be constantly sharpened in order for it to perform at its optimum. The sharpening process is both an art and a scientific process, and thus demands professional expertise.
One of the methods by which hair scissors could be sharpened is through a whetstone. A light amount of oil should be applied on the best side of the whetstone, and then this could be used to sharpen a pair of blunt styling tools. Open the scissors widely, so as to sharpen the entire length of the blade. The exterior part of the scissors, which has the bevel blade, should be laid flat on its back, while the back portion of the blade should be diagonally angled. Gently, yet with an ample amount of pressure, strike the blades on the whetstone. Then lift the hair scissors after every stroke. This process should be repeated until the bevel side has an even cutting edge. After completing these steps, a soft cloth must be used in order to wipe the blade clean. The same exact steps should be followed in sharpening the other blade.
The next step is to repeatedly open and close the hair scissors after the sharpening process. Notice if the blades touch each other at a single point on the cutting edges, of course. Also try to examine the pivot screw, it should be loosened and fixed of the blades are too rigid. On the other hand, if the blades are loosely attached, the screw should then be tightened and held in a fixed position.
A bench stone can also be employed in sharpening hair scissors. It has aluminum oxide and has a rough side which would be great for sharpening. The scissors should be sharpened on the coarse side of the bench stone, in order to get rid of unwanted fibers. A significant amount of oil should also be applied on the scissors while it is being sharpened on the stone.
Knowing such, you can now sharpen your styling tools and probably sharpen your hair dressing techniques.
